What is commercial use?
Commercial (for profit) use license allows you to use Shiptalk images on a commercial basis. The types of images usually sold under the terms of the commercial use license are generally called "stock images". All images on ShiptalkImages.com are stock images and can be used for many purposes including, book covers, as a postcard, in an ad, as part of a web site design, in a magazine, etc. A commercial use license does not explicitly prohibit any use of images for editorial or personal (non-commercial use), therefore commercial use includes editorial and personal use as well.
If an individual's or a property's likeness is used commercially, you should ensure that you obtain a model or property release authorizing such use. ShiptalkImages.com will usually not allow purchasing of unreleased images for commercial use, and you are welcome to contact us should you need to receive a copy of the release form for commercial use images you have bought. A release form is only required in the circumstances referred to above. ShiptalkImages cannot however accept liability for the use of any image bought on ShiptalkImages without a release form.
What is editorial use?
"Editorial" is defined as legitimate mass media, presumed to be unbiased, which reaches a large (usually over 2000), anonymous audience. Customarily acceptable editorial uses include newspaper or magazine articles and feature stories which are associated with the image(s) used; internet articles and feature stories which are associated with the image(s) used; or books on specific topics. Editorial use images are usually different from commercial stock images; they can be photos of celebrities, politicians, newsworthy events, and many more.
What is a release?
A release is a signed documented agreement on which an individual or property owner gives permission to the photographer for the image to be reproduced commercially.
